Standard VFD vs Step-Up (Boost) VFD: What Is the Difference?

Standard VFD vs Step-Up (Boost) VFD: What Is the
Difference?
Both control speed; the core difference is a boost stage after rectification. A standard
VFD never outputs more than its input; a step-up VFD raises the DC bus first, most
commonly single-phase 220V in to three-phase 380V out. Wrong choice causes weak torque,
overheating, or failure.
1. How a standard (AC-DC-AC) VFD works
Mains AC is rectified to DC, buffered on the bus capacitors, then inverted to variable-
frequency AC. The bus follows the input peak (220V≈311V, 380V≈537V); without a boost
stage output RMS cannot exceed input RMS (Siemens). So 380V in gives 380V out, while a
220V-in standard model only outputs a 220V class and cannot drive a 380V motor.Standard VFD vs Step-Up (Boost) VFD: What Is the Difference? 1
2. What the step-up VFD adds: a boost stage
It inserts a boost stage between rectification and inversion: a voltage doubler lifts ~310V
to ~620V, or active Boost/PFC holds the bus at 540–620V before inverting to genuine 380V.
Used where only 220V single-phase exists (rural sites, workshops, temporary sites) but a
380V motor, pump, or compressor must run, without applying for three-phase power.
The solar pump VFD is a different “boost”: low-voltage PV DC goes through
Boost+MPPT before inversion; its input is PV DC, not mains — do not confuse it with the
220-to-380 type.
3. Side-by-side comparison

4. Costs and limits of the step-up type
Raises voltage, not power: input current rises sharply (vendor figure ~1.7–2.5×); go 1–
2 frames up or keep 30–50% margin; size cables/breakers for it.
100Hz single-phase ripple needs larger caps or a DC choke; without PFC harmonics
are higher; active PFC can cut THDi to within 5% (vendor claim, IEEE 519).
Practical power ceiling limited by input current and caps (vendor experience ~7.5kW);
use three-phase supply above that.
Motor inductive loads only; not a universal 380V supply for lights, heaters, or cabinets;
for constant-speed supply choose a single-to-three-phase power source.
5. How to choose
Three-phase 380V on site → standard VFD, cheapest and most reliable.
Only 220V 1-phase, must speed-control a 380V motor → step-up type, upsize current.
Constant-speed 380V only, no speed control → single-to-three-phase power source.
Solar pumping / off-grid DC → solar pump VFD with MPPT.
FAQ
Q1: Can a standard VFD step 220V up to 380V?
A: No; without a boost stage output cannot exceed input — use a step-up VFD.
A: No; it raises voltage only, input current rises, so upsize or keep margin.
Q2: Can it run every 380V device?
A: No, motor loads only; use a universal single-to-three-phase source otherwise.
In short: the difference is “whether there is a boost stage.” Use a standard VFD where
380V exists; choose step-up only when only 220V single-phase is available for a speed-
controlled 380V motor, and upsize the current with margin.
